Adventure Travel Questions and Answers

All of the staff at Travel Nation have been on overland and adventure tours (part of our training you see!) and are able to answer most questions and give impartial advice on what trips might suit you.

Here are some common queries answered about travelling on an overland or adventure tour.

Please call us if you want to book a trip or order a brochure.

Your companions

It is of course possible that you might not get on with anyone on your trip - but in reality, pretty unlikely.

An adventure tour can consist of anything form a 10 day trip in Thailand to get you bearings when you first set foot in Asia to a longer ‘overland expedition’ style trips where you will be perhaps 15 of you travelling together on a converted truck across Africa or South America. Whatever trip you are on, you will of course be in the company of a group of people who have all rewarded themselves with the time to explore the same part of the world and in the same way.

When you are travelling, your whole metabolism slows down and most people’s real personalities come out, including of course, your own ! But don’t worry, this doesn’t mean that you will all be singing ‘If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands’ round the campfire every night. What it does usually mean is that you will get on fine, have fun, get to know people way better than usually happens at home. Most people come away with great memories and a handful of people who they stay in touch with long after the trip has finished.

Additionally, don’t forget that people bring their own skills and interests. You may find yourself camped in the Okovango Delta in Botswana with a chef, an orthintologist and an astronomer..

Will I be the only person on the trip travelling alone

Doubtful. Usually over half of these trips are made up of solo travellers

Can I stay longer in one place?

There is some flexibility built in, especially on the longer trips, where half of the appeal is that you simply cannot predict where you will be on a particular day. If you want to hang out somewhere for longish periods of time, this type of travel won’t suit you. That said, it isn’t uncommon for people to begin their travels on one of these trips and then to continue travelling at their own pace when the trip has finished.

What is the kitty?

On some trips a kitty is used to pay for food. This payment is made locally to your trip leader / driver at the begining of the trip. If there is money left over at the end, it can be refunded - or more often than not, it is used for an end of trip knees up !

Can I book accommodation?

We can usually pre book excellent value accommodation in the hotel where your trip starts from and ends at.

Can I get by with spending less money than the adventure tour brochure recommends?

It is a recommended amount, yes you could budget and get away with less, but if it is a trip of a lifetime you could seriously miss out on something that you probably wouldn’t get an opportunity to do again.

Where do we sleep?

Accommodation on some trips will be all in local (non international standard) hotels and guesthouses. On others it will be a mix of camping and hotels - sometimes Camping can range from being in campsites with hot showers / toilets / washing machines to 'free camping' of the road in the wilderness.
