Ecuador feels really wild and tropical, with jungles, beaches and volcanoes. It’s a great place to get active during your South America or an Around the World trip, but there are plenty of chances to balance this out with some real relaxation on castaway beaches.

— Enjoy the contrast of grand colonial architecture in the old town of Quito, with the stylish shopping malls of the modern city.
— Take a land or sea based tour to explore the Galapagos Islands with optional extras like snorkelling or diving with sea lions and pacific sea turtles.
— Venture into the Amazon to visit indigenous communities, spot wildlife, or try white-water rafting.
— Travel through the stunning Avenue of Volcanoes, passing Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, as well as the impressive Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador’s highest peak.
— Learn to surf at the fun and friendly Beaches of Montanita in the south or head up north to Esmeraldas for deserted tropical beaches and the year-round party resort of Atacames.
Climate in Ecuador
Being directly on the Equator, Ecuador enjoys a temperate climate all year round, so it’s very easy to work into a Round the World trip. The hottest season runs from November to May, when the rainforest and the highlands experience heavy afternoon showers. Temperatures are lower in the highlands, ranging from around 5 degrees at night, to 25 degrees during the day.
Visa advice for Ecuador
UK Passport holders do not need a visa in advance and will be given a 90 day tourist visa on arrival.
Health advice in Ecuador
The best way to stay healthy during your Ecuador trip is to avoid buying food from street vendors, peel raw fruit and vegetables, and only drink bottled water in all parts of the country. Yellow fever and malaria are problems in the Amazon and some parts of the coast, so make sure you have the necessary vaccinations before you set off on your Round the World trip. Altitude sickness can be a problem in Highland areas including Quito, take time to acclimatize, eat lightly upon arrival and drink plenty of water and coca tea.
Getting around Ecuador
Ecuador’s small size is a huge plus point when it comes to getting around, and an efficient transport system means you can travel overland easily and comfortably. Avoid inland borders with Colombia and Peru; the coastal border crossings are more commonly used by tourists and are better policed.
