Thailand Travel Guide & Advice

Thailand has something for everyone. It is a sundrenched country packed with colour, culture, wildlife and scenery.

The moment that you set foot on Thai soil, you know that you are in the ‘Land of Smiles’. Tuk-tuk drivers pass by with friendly grins, street traders peddle weird and wonderful wares, you will drift off into heaven while you have your afternoon massage on the beach. The people just radiate warmth and humour, and make you feel instantly welcome and at ease.

Pretty much whatever you are looking for in a holiday, Thailand has an answer. It is like a ‘greatest hits of Asia’. You can trek amongst the colourful mountain tribes of the North, visit rainforests alive with monkeys, wild elephants and toucans, and wind up on an island paradise of white beaches and swaying palm trees, dive or snorkel the underwater wonderland teeming with exotic marine life. The options are almost endless. And unless you don’t have the mis-fortune one being of those ‘just meat and 2 veg’ types, the food will send you crazy …. after each meal you will be willing yourself to get hungry again !

The tropical climate in Thailand is warm and humid, with temperatures at around 30°C all year round. Generally, the Thailand climate is dry across the whole country between December and May. The monsoon rains hit different areas of Thailand at different times of the year, so if it rains in one place, you can just hop over to the opposite coast for a bit of that lovely sunshine.

Visitors holding a UK passport will receive a free standard 30-day visa on arrival in Thailand, as long as the passport is valid for six months after the intended departure date. If you intend to stay longer than 30 days, you should contact the Thai embassy in London to arrange an extended tourist visa prior to departure from the UK.

Alongside the general advice given here, please ensure that you have the correct vaccinations before you leave home. Thailand is a clean country, especially when compared to many other Asian countries. However, you still have a greater risk of illness than at home. There are more varieties of bacteria present just because Thailand has a tropical climate.

Travelling in Thailand is easy. You can fly cheaply between all the major cities. The bus system is well developed with many routes, air condition and reclining seats. For overnight journeys train travel is a great option, as you’ll get your own little sleeper berth - though it is a good idea to book these ahead as space is often not available on some of more popular routes such as Bangkok to Chiang Mai. The south is filled with minibuses linking all the islands and beaches together. And don’t forget the tuk tuks of course !
