Koh Samui 2010, by Travel Nation's Martin Lake

I flew with EVA Air and Bangkok Airways to Koh Samui in March 2010. If you are planning a stop in Koh Samui or including this destination as part of your round the world trip, feel free to get in touch with me for further information on 01273 320 572 or martin@travelnation.co.uk

You can’t really go wrong with Thailand.

One of the most common first stops on a ‘round the world ticket’ is Bangkok. From here, Koh Samui is easily reached with a short one hour flight directly onto the island. Budget conscious travellers can also take an overnight bus or train to the town of Surat Thani and get the ferry from there.

Whilst many visitors head for the main beach of Chaweng on the east coast, we decided to opt for the north of the island and Maenam. It’s a 20 minute taxi ride from the airport.

Our choice of accommodation was an old Travel Nation favourite, the Mercure Samui Buri Resort. With its unique villas right on the beachfront all with private plunge pools, it provided the ideal place for a relaxing break. Set in lush gardens and with a very impressive ‘infinity’ pool, the resort offered an up-market feel but without the price tag to match. There is a Spa offering the usual treatments and also massages on the beach. However, the resort is quite remote. It is suitable for couples and families but not for those wanting nightlife. There are a few small restaurants set just behind the hotel which is handy for a variation on the evening menu, but don’t expect the buzz and neon of a night out in Chaweng.

If it’s the middle ground that you’re after, somewhere between Mae Nam and Chaweng, the small town of Bo Phut is my ‘top tip’. Again, located on the north of the island, just east of Maenam, this small and very charming ‘Fisherman’s Village’ hits the spot. It’s one of the oldest areas on Samui and the boutique style shops give the place an elegant, mediterranean feel. The resaturants line the beach and they all make the very most of the spectacular back drop of Koh Phangan in the distance. A delicious Prawn Curry or Pad Thai will set you back just three pounds and a large beer just two. My recommendation for somewhere to stay here would be ‘The Peace Resort’. It’s right on the beach with a very laid back atmosphere. It’s reasonably priced and everything is within walking distance…

As I mentioned, along with the welcoming smiles of the local Thai people, you really can’t go wrong with Thailand.

December through to April is a great time to visit Koh Samui. The temperature averages 25-30 degrees and there’s very little rain.
